In 2015, total U.S. trade with foreign countries was $4.99 trillion. That was $2.23 trillion in exports and $2.76 trillion in imports of both goods and services. The United States was the world's third-largest exporter, after China and the European Union (EU). It's the world's largest importer. U.S. export growth is high in sectors ranging from integrated circuits to civil aircraft, cotton, dairy, tree/ fruit nuts, and other agricultural products.

In 2015, Vietnam was the United States’ fastest growing export market (up over 23% from 2014) demonstrating an increasing demand for U.S. technologies and goods.  (Source: US Embassy and Consulate in Vietnam).

According to preliminary statistics of the Vietnam’s General Administration of Customs, for the first 4 months of 2016, the United States is the second largest trading partner of Vietnam, (just behind China) with an export turnover of $13, 92 billion, accounting for 13.3% of total exports and imports of the country, an increase of 13.5% compared to the same period of the first 4 months of 2015.

Importing & Sourcing Opportunities

Vietnamese import demand is expected to grow by around 250% between 2010 and 2020 - faster than any other emerging countries given the rapid economic growth.  Demand for imported goods is significant increased. 

Specifically, the opportunities for the Vietnamese companies to import from the United States are as follows:

  • Aircrafts, medical equipment, industrial machines, semi-conductors and telecommunications
  • Industrial supplies and equipment including chemicals, petroleum products and plastic
  • Consumer goods such as functional foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cell phones and cars
  • Opportunities in agribusiness include fresh fruits, meat and poultry, wheat, corn, soya beans, processed food, dairy products, beverages (wine, juices, sparkling juices and spirits) and franchise
  • Wheat and grains, animal feed including soybeans, corn
  • Energy and technologies
  • Strong economic growth has increased demand for education and training services in areas of English language, business and management and information technology, vocational training remains high, especially in major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.
  • Opportunity for EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program in real estate or in the hospitality industry: Vietnamese investors may also qualify for EB-5 visas by investing through regional center based on proposals for promoting economic growth.
